5/4 pressure-treated deck boards laid horizontally for a fence look sharp. Clean lines, modern, the whole bit. I get why people want them. The problem is that half the ones I get called out to look at look like a wave pool by their second summer. Bowed, cupped, twisting, fasteners popping out the face. Owner’s mad at the lumber. The lumber didn’t do anything wrong. Whoever built the fence did.

This stuff works fine if you build it right. Here’s what right looks like.

Why 5/4 deck boards in the first place

5/4 boards measure about an inch thick. Thicker than a standard fence picket, which gives you a beefier look and shadows that actually read from across the yard. Pressure-treated means they’ll hold up in our weather without rotting in five years. Stacked horizontal between posts, they look architectural without you having to pay for cedar or composite.

That’s the upside. The downside is that 5/4 PT lumber is soaking wet when you buy it. And wet lumber moves as it dries. If you build like the boards aren’t going to move, the boards will prove you wrong.

Why they warp — the real reason

Three things cause most of the warping problems on a horizontal 5/4 fence.

Moisture content. Most pressure-treated lumber comes off the truck loaded with water. Once it’s hung on a fence and the sun hits it, it dries fast and unevenly. That uneven drying is what cupping and bowing look like.

Span. A board with 6 feet between posts moves less than the same board with 8 feet between posts. More unsupported wood, more room to twist.

Fasteners. One screw per side, dead center, gives the board a pivot point to cup around. Wrong screw and it backs out, snaps, or rusts through the wood and streaks the face black.

Fix all three at once or you’ll be rebuilding in two years.

Post spacing: 6 feet max. Don’t argue with me.

This one is non-negotiable. 6 feet on center between posts. Not 7. Not “well, my yard came out to 7-foot-4 so I rounded up.” 6 feet. If your run doesn’t divide cleanly, you shorten the end bay, not stretch the middle ones.

Had a guy in Roxborough call me out a couple summers back. He’d built a 70-foot horizontal fence himself with 8-foot post spacing because he didn’t want to “waste lumber on extra posts.” Looked great the day he finished. By the second August it looked like the boardwalk in Wildwood — every board bellying out in the middle of the span. We pulled the whole thing, reset posts at 6 feet, and rebuilt. He spent more on the rebuild than the four extra posts would’ve cost him in the first place.

Orient your boards for drainage

5/4 deck boards have a slight crown. Run your hand across the end grain and look at the growth rings. The rings curve — you want that curve facing up like a frown so water sheds off the top face instead of pooling on it. Bark side out on a fence. Trapped water on the wrong face is what kicks off cupping in the first place.

Same thinking on install: don’t slap the boards on tight. Water needs somewhere to go.

Square-edge, not grooved

This one trips homeowners up. Grooved deck boards — the ones with a slot down each long edge for hidden deck clips — are made for decks where the groove gets covered by hardware. On a fence, that groove is exposed. It catches water, catches bugs, and gives the board a weak edge that splits as soon as the wood moves.

Buy square-edge 5/4 boards. Pay the extra buck per board if you have to. Grooved boards on a fence are asking for trouble you don’t need.

Fasteners that actually hold

Use exterior-rated structural screws. Not deck screws, and definitely not drywall screws — I shouldn’t have to say that but I’ve seen it. I run #9 or #10 stainless or polymer-coated structural screws, two per board per post. One at the top of the board, one at the bottom. Not centered.

Two screws gives the board something to fight against when it tries to cup. One screw lets it pivot like a hinge. Predrill within an inch or two of board ends — PT lumber splits if you don’t, and a split board is a warped board in waiting.

Gap spacing for airflow

Leave 1/8 to 1/4 inch between courses. A 16d nail makes a perfect spacer when you’re hanging boards. Two reasons this matters: airflow lets the boards dry evenly on both faces instead of just the outside, and the gap gives the wood room to swell back up in wet weather without pushing the whole section sideways.

Tight-stacked boards look beautiful on day one. By the end of the first wet spring they’re pushing each other off the posts.

The bottom line

A 5/4 deck board horizontal fence is a good-looking fence when it’s built right. 6-foot post spacing. Square-edge boards. Crown up for drainage. Two coated or stainless structural screws per post per board. A finger’s width of gap between courses. Do all five and you get a fence that still looks straight in five years.

Skip any of them and you get a wave pool. Build it once, build it right. Cheaper than building it twice.
