Most homeowners plan a fence the same way: figure out the perimeter, count the posts, price the chain link, and then — somewhere around step seven — go, “Oh right, we need a gate.” Then they cram one in wherever it fits.
That’s backwards. The gate is the hardest part of the fence. Plan it last and you’re setting yourself up for a gate that drags, a post placement that fights the slope, or a driveway opening so tight your truck can’t get through without folding the mirror in. Plan it first and everything else falls into place.
Here’s what you need to nail down before you touch a post digger.
1. Decide the Width Based on What’s Actually Going Through It
Walk-through gates for chain link are typically 3 or 4 feet wide. Vehicle gates are a different conversation entirely.
A standard single car is about 6 feet wide. Add mirrors, add the fact that nobody drives in a perfectly straight line, and you want a minimum 10-foot opening for a single vehicle lane — and that’s tight. If trucks, trailers, or equipment are coming through, go 12 feet. If it’s just for a riding mower or ATV, you can get away with 8.
Don’t guess. Go stand in your driveway and watch what actually uses it. Measure the widest vehicle. Then add clearance because you’re going to be tired or in a hurry or it’s going to be dark, and you need margin.
Double gates work fine for wide openings — two 6-foot panels gives you a 12-foot clear opening when both are swung back. Just understand that both leaves need to be secured when open, or the wind turns them into wrecking balls.
2. Account for Swing Clearance Before the Post Goes In
A gate swings. That sounds obvious until you watch someone hang a gate that opens directly into a slope, a retaining wall, or the side of a shed.
For a walk gate, you need clear, flat ground equal to the width of the gate leaf in the direction it swings. For a 4-foot gate swinging inward, that means 4 feet of unobstructed flat ground inside the fence line. If the yard rises or drops sharply right inside the opening, the gate’s going to hit the ground before it reaches 90 degrees — or it’ll hang open at a weird angle and never latch properly.
Vehicle gates need even more thought. A 12-foot opening with two 6-foot leaves swinging inward needs 6 feet of clear space on each side of the opening, plus the posts themselves. If there are shrubs, a utility box, a corner of the house — anything — you’re going to regret where you put that post.
Figure out which way the gate swings before the post is set. Resetting a gate post is not a fun afternoon project.
3. Ground Slope Is the Gate’s Worst Enemy — Deal With It Early
Chain link gates are rectangular. The ground usually isn’t.
On flat ground, a gate hangs clean, swings clean, latches clean. On sloped ground, you have choices — and you need to make them consciously.
The two main approaches are raking and stepping.
Raking means the top and bottom rails follow the slope. The whole fence line angles with the grade. This looks natural on gradual slopes and keeps a consistent gap at the bottom, but you cannot rake a gate — the gate leaf is a fixed rectangle. So if you rake the fence panels, the gate section needs to be level, which means you’ll have a grade transition at the gate posts. Plan for that and it’s fine. Ignore it and you’ve got a gap problem or a dragging problem at the gate.
Stepping means the fence panels drop in flat horizontal increments — each panel is level but drops down at the post. This makes the gate integration cleaner, but you end up with triangular gaps at the bottom of each panel where the grade runs underneath.
Neither approach is wrong. They’re just different. The point is: don’t decide the fence approach without also deciding how the gate is going to work at that slope. They’re connected.
I had a job in Roxborough — steep backyard, homeowner wanted a gate at the bottom of the slope for rear yard access. Nobody thought through how the grade dropped hard right at the gate opening. We ended up with a gate that needed a custom curved bottom bar to follow the grade, which meant fabricating something, which meant time and money that wasn’t in the original number. That conversation should have happened before the posts were ordered, not after they were set.
4. Think About Post Sizing for Gate Posts Specifically
Gate posts take punishment that line posts don’t. Every time someone opens or closes a gate, that hinge-side post is absorbing the lever force of the whole gate leaf. For a heavy double-drive gate, that’s real load over real time.
Chain link gate posts are typically 2-3/8“ for walk gates and 2-7/8“ or larger for drive gates. If a contractor or a YouTube video is telling you to use the same post for gate applications as for line posts on a wide vehicle gate, they’re cutting corners that are going to cost you later.
The hinge post needs to go deeper, too. Standard line posts in most residential installs go 2 feet down. Gate posts should go 2.5 to 3 feet, and if you’re in ground that freezes, you want to be below the frost line regardless. A heaved gate post is a gate that won’t close — and it only gets worse from there.
5. Latches and Hardware — Get the Right Stuff for the Job
A walk gate gets a fork latch or a cane bolt. A drive gate needs something that will hold against a 50-mph gust or a kid who thinks slamming is acceptable.
Double drive gates need a drop rod on the inactive leaf — that’s the pin that drops into the ground to lock one leaf in place so the other has something to latch against. Without it, both leaves are flopping around every time someone opens one side. You’d be amazed how often this gets left out.
Hardware should be galvanized or coated to match the fence. Cheap hardware oxidizes, seizes, and fails. Chain link is low maintenance fencing — don’t undermine that with hinges that need to be replaced in three years.
The Short Version
Gates first. Gate width based on actual vehicle dimensions, not a guess. Swing clearance before the post goes in, not after. Ground slope figured out and reconciled with how the gate leaf is going to hang. Gate posts sized and set deeper than line posts. Hardware that’s going to hold up.
Do this at the planning stage and a chain link fence goes in clean and functions the way it should for twenty years. Skip it and you’re fixing things that should have been right from the start.
